As part of our Hand Made textile, ceramic and jewellery exhibition in April, artist Judy Balchin will be demonstrating the art of needle felting. She will be accompanied by her merry band of woolly characters including Woollymeena, Delicious Delores, Marvellous Mavis, not forgetting the dastardly duo Mildred and Muriel. Judy will be explaining the simple technique of needle felting and will demonstrate the materials and equipment needed to start this amazing craft. She hopes that you will drop by for a chat and a giggle…and perhaps be inspired to have a go!
Judy Balchin has been a practising artist for most of her adult life. After completing a degree in Grahic Design at Maidstone College of Art, she worked at the BBC as a graphic artist before starting her freelance career as a lettering artist and designer, working from her home in Maidstone, Kent. Over the years she has worked as an illustrator, written over 30 books and many magazine articles on different crafts. She has designed craft kits and appeared on television demonstrating her work and spreading the word about the fascination of ‘making’. She is definitely a maker and loves the therapy of spending time with like minded folk, chatting and creating. For the past 7 years her passion has been for wool. Dry felting (or needle felting) is the art of sculpting wool with a barbed needle…a magical process indeed. She loves the versatility of wool fibres which allow her to interpret her ideas and sense of fun in a unique and whimsical way. Her woolly characters cry out to be stroked and touched, which she greatly encourages!
As the ‘Woolly Felters’, Judy and her sister Roz now run workshops, demonstrate and give talks to pass on their knowledge and inspire others to take up this fascinating textile art.
