Laurence Uttley

I became interested in ceramics late in life after visiting the national Pottery and Ceramics festival, Art in Clay, at Hatfield House where more than 200 artists were exhibiting. I was inspired to start an adult education class at Canterbury Christ Church learning about stoneware and earthenware ceramics.
After taking early retirement I was able to devote more time to ceramics and developed an interest in Raku pottery, studying alternative firing techniques and attending courses under John Evans’s tutelage.
After spending my childhood and most of my adult life living by the coast my forms are inspired by nature’s seed pods and utilises natures discards, horse hair, feathers and sea weed, to decorate the pots.
